After Lewis Hamilton won his seventh Formula 1 championship and broke the record previously held by Michael Schumacher, Max Verstappen conceded the Briton is now “the greatest”.

With his seventh title win that equalled Michael Schumacher’s record, and considering he broke previous race win and pole position records, Hamilton is now statistically the greatest driver in the history of Formula 1.

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen was asked about the Briton’s accomplishment after the Turkish Grand Prix.

“It was pretty obvious that he was going to win it, but it’s incredible,” said the Dutch driver.

“He drives very strongly, again today. So yes, I guess he is now the greatest driver in Formula 1 ever, in terms of stats anyway.

“It’s a great result. Also from the whole team, because they have been so dominant, then they certainly deserve it.”

Considering how popular Verstappen is in the Netherlands, it is no wonder that Dutch fans aren’t always on Hamilton’s side. However, after the race, the seven-time champion acknowledged even those fans that “don’t support” him.

“Right now is not the time to reflect,” Hamilton told Dutch tv channel Ziggo Sport.

“I want to enjoy it now. No one knows what’s going to happen, the world is going through a difficult phase right now.

“That’s why I think it’s very important to cherish the moments we get. That’s what I’m going to try and do. Embrace the people around me.

“I am very grateful to all my fans and also for those who don’t support me, I still appreciate that you support this sport. I hope everyone stays safe and positive through this difficult year.

“It will get better,” concluded the Briton.
