Mercedes Technical Director James Allison says “a weekend” like the one in Austria “is extremely helpful” for Valtteri Bottas “to show he is worthy of his place in the team”.

Valtteri Bottas has faced a lot of criticism for his performances in 2021, with many saying that his time with Mercedes is nearing its end.

However, during the Styrian Grand Prix weekend the Finn performed admirably, took P2 in Qualifying and managed to finish the race in P3, ahead of Sergio Perez who had fresher and softer tyres.

During his appearance on the F1 Nation podcast James Allison praised Bottas’ contribution to the team.

“Valtteri is the one whose mood is a little more unchanging, he remains the sort of implacable figure he has always been,” the Briton said.

“He had a strong weekend in the car, qualifying a whisker ahead of Lewis, and was determined to get every point he could from the weekend.

“So we see the best from them in supporting us and pushing us, but in a way that is helpful, not sort of finger-pointy or destructive.”

Allison added that Bottas’ performance last weekend is exactly what the Finn needs to keep his Mercedes seat.

“He is very, very keen to show he is worthy of his place in the team and [being] a top-ranked driver, and a weekend like the last one, is extremely helpful for him in that regard.”

However, Allison doesn’t want to speculate on the team’s 2022 driver lineup.

“It’s not my place to speculate on that, to be honest. They’ve been a very good driver pairing, but it’s not my place to speculate further,” concluded Allison.
