After their collision on lap 1 of the Belgian Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso immediately went on the radio and called Lewis Hamilton “an idiot”, adding that he “only knows how to drive and start in first”.
This caused many observers to blast the Spaniard for disrespecting a seven-time champion, with some even calling him bitter and jealous.
Alonso had an opportunity to team up with Hamilton at McLaren in 2007. At the time the Briton was in his rookie F1 season, while the Spaniard was coming off of two consecutive world titles.
Despite Alonso being hailed as an heir apparent to retired seven-time champion Michael Schumacher, he finished the season equal on points to his rookie team-mate.
Well, in an interview ahead of Christmas 2021, right after Lewis unjustly lost the 2021 title at the controversial Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Alonso had some disrespectful words to say about his former team-mate.
After Spanish interviewers said that back in 2007 “the whole of Spain didn’t like [Hamilton]”, Fernando proceeded to take shots at the Briton, while framing it as a joke.

“During that time, he wasn’t too bad. He was a rookie,” Alonso said.
“He got worse with years, now I see him a bit more lost. There’s always bad and good guys, that’s part of the sport.”
He was then asked if he was still in contact with Lewis.
“Not much. He’s not having any relationship with anyone. He isolated himself in the last few years.
“He’s in the world of fashion, wearing strange clothes,” the Spaniard concluded, while everybody laughed.
As much as it was framed as ‘guys joking around’, there’s no doubt that the words Alonso said were very disrespectful toward a seven-time world champion.
