After her first year of working with Lewis Hamilton, Angela Cullen revealed some of the details of their professional and personal relationship.
Angela Cullen is more than Lewis Hamilton’s physiotherapist, performance coach and assistant. She is also his confidant, friend and overall right-hand woman.
She started working for Lewis in 2016, after she did some work with Lewis’ then team-mate Nico Rosberg. At the time she revealed Lewis asked her if she would be his coach at all 2016 Grands Prix.
“I thought he was joking because they don’t have any female coaches in Formula One,” Angela said.
Lewis Hamilton’s reputation at the time was that of an outgoing “party boy”, with various interests from fashion to music and more. However, after their first year of working together Angela said this reputation was not deserved.
“I have spent the whole year with him and we partied maybe four times,” said the New Zealander.
“He is not a party boy. If he has a three-week recovery between races he might have a drink to celebrate a race win, but if there is a race meeting the next week, he won’t drink at all.
“He occasionally does crazy things but no more than any normal person.”

She also revealed her relationship with Lewis is more than just professional, she genuinely cares for him as a person.
“He is the most amazingly talented and dedicated athlete. And there is not a day or a race where I leave and don’t get a text thanking me for what I do.
“I’m not someone who would just do the job because it is exciting. I need to be working for someone I really want to help — and he really does instil that in me.”
Angela went on to explain the extent of her duties at the races.
“I’m called a physiotherapist but the role with Lewis is as performance coach. Over the course of a race weekend, my job is to eliminate any external factors so he only has to think about his driving and not have to worry about anything else.
“I wake him up, I order his food, I drive him to the track,” concluded Cullen.
