Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz says Lewis Hamilton had to be “doing something special” to be able to pass both Max Verstappen and Valtteri Bottas in a car that was “not faster”.

In the days leading up to the Spanish Grand Prix, Carlos Sainz talked to El Mundo Deportivo newspaper and gave his comments on Lewis Hamilton’s amazing performance at the Portuguese Grand Prix.

“The truth is that I was surprised how easily Hamilton passed Verstappen and Bottas in Portugal,” said the Spanish driver.

“To overtake like that means you are either much faster or you’re doing something special, so I think he is at a very, very high level.

“The Mercedes is not faster than the Red Bull now, so the ability to go as fast in the races has been surprising.”

When asked which driver impressed him the most in 2021, Sainz said it was Hamilton.

“I have not thought about it or analysed it much, but if I have to say someone who is doing particularly well now, it is Hamilton,” concluded the Spaniard.
