Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz says car development is “the core of Formula 1”, and if Red Bull breached the budget cap, “there needs to be a high penalty”.
While the F1 world is waiting for the FIA to announce the penalty for Red Bull’s 2021 budget cap breach, F1 personalities are giving their opinions on the situation.
Before the FIA announced their findings, Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz was asked what punishment he would find suitable.
“This is [for] the FIA [to determine],” the Spaniard said.
“They need to rule on what they believe are the rules. That is why there is a set of rules and a set of penalties that are already determined depending on how much you jump the budget cap or not.”

Asked about Red Bull’s situation, he said he hopes “they get a penalty according to the infringement”.
“We all know how important development is in Formula 1 – it is everything, it is the core of Formula 1,” he continued.
“So if you jump that rule, for sure, there needs to be a high penalty,” Sainz concluded.
