Red Bull team boss Christian Horner expressed with surprise at “just the amount of development” Mercedes had in 2022, “under the budget cap”.

Red Bull was the only team to break the 2021 budget cap, after it was determined that the team has overspent by 1.6 percent.

For this, they received a $7 million fine, and a 10 percent reduction in aerodynamic testing time.

However, at the end of 2022, Red Bull’s team boss Christian Horner expressed his ‘surprise’ at the amount of development Mercedes was able to do throughout the year.

The German team started the year in a very bad state, but by the end of the season they significantly improved, and even managed to score a 1-2 at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix.

“Under the budget cap, it has been surprising just the amount of development,” Horner said.

“It has certainly been surprising the rate they have developed, particularly in the second half of the year. But that is F1.

“When you consider where they were in Bahrain to where they were at the end of the year, it was a big step,” the Briton concluded.
