1996 Formula 1 champion Damon Hill says his top moment of the 2020 season was George Russell’s performance in a Mercedes at the Sakhir Grand Prix.
After almost two full seasons in an uncompetitive Williams, Mercedes’ junior driver George Russell finally got his chance to show what he can really do in competitive car at the penultimate race of the 2020 season – the Sakhir Grand Prix.
Russell was given this opportunity by Mercedes, after Lewis Hamilton tested positive for COVID-19 and was forced to miss the race. The young Briton impressed everyone as he put himself in a position to win the race, not once, but two times.
Unfortunately, Mercedes’ pit stop mix-up and a tyre puncture prevented him from claiming his first Formula 1 win and he ultimately finished in ninth place.
When asked to give his top moment of the season, during his appearance on Natalie Pinkham’s “In the Pink” podcast, Damon Hill gave the no. 1 spot to Russell’s Sakhir Grand Prix performance.
“It has to be the George Russell race,” said the Briton.

“I’m very sorry for Lewis and for Valtteri, but basically this was a star is born moment. A guy gets a shot at his big moment and was doing amazingly well.
“Sadly it all went really pear-shaped, but he still had a really great race and showed what he could do. That was a brilliant moment.
“I’m always asked this about Formula 1; if they all had the same equipment, who would win the race?
“Sadly the fact about our sport is they can’t all have the same equipment because that’s part of the DNA of the sport.
“But someone got a stab at showing what they could do – the reason he got into that car is because he already shown what he could do with two years at Williams.
“It was a very exciting moment,” concluded Hill.
