1996 Formula 1 champion Damon Hill has praised Lewis Hamilton’s “stunning” Spanish Grand Prix comeback drive, and says there are “seeds of hope there” for Mercedes.

After the Spanish Grand Prix, Damon Hill praised Lewis Hamilton’s performance, especially in light of his early collision with Kevin Magnussen which relegated him to P19.

After saying at first that he believes it would be better to retire the car and save the engine, Lewis then pulled off a masterful comeback drive which saw him ultimately finish in P5 (it would have been P4 were it not for a late technical issue with his car).

“It’s the Hamilton emotional rollercoaster isn’t it,” the Briton said.

“It’s just amazing how he just thinks ‘oh no it’s no good’. But that was a stunning performance and it was a champion’s drive right through from nowhere.

“They gave him the equipment to do it as well. I thought it was stunning.

“I think definitely, they showed they had the pace this weekend. They’ve only just started to whittle and fettle it into perfection.

“There are seeds of hope there,” Hill concluded.
