1996 F1 champion Damon Hill says “early races can be misleading”, and adds Mercedes has been making “inroads to bring some challenge to Red Bull”.
The first two races of the 2023 season were quite disappointing for Mercedes. However, at the Australian Grand Prix the team seemed to make quite a step forward, with Lewis Hamilton ending the race on the second step of the podium.
While discussing Mercedes on the F1 Nation podcast, Damon Hill said he believes the early races were not a true indication of the team’s performance.
“Mercedes was seemingly making some progress – inroads to bring some challenge to Red Bull,” Hill said.

The Briton added he believes Mercedes has steadily improved since their disappointing showing at the Bahrain Grand Prix.
“I thought I saw signs of the Mercedes, particularly, having made a leap forward after Friday.
“The car just looked completely different on the Saturday and it sort of continued right through to Melbourne,” he concluded.
