David Coulthard says Lewis Hamilton would be Michael Schumacher’s equal if they were competing in the German’s prime, while Jacques Villeneuve shoots down the ‘it’s just the car’ argument.
After Lewis Hamilton won his seventh Formula 1 championship and equalled Michael Schumacher’s record at the Turkish Grand Prix, many Formula 1 personalities gave their comments on his amazing performance. Former McLaren driver David Coulthard says that the Briton would be Michael Schumacher’s equal if they were competing during his prime years.
“There is no question that if Michael was still racing today, at his prime, he would be staring in the eyes of his equal,” the Scot told Channel 4.
“Because I think Michael is exceptional and I think Lewis is exceptional. And I think the way that he won his championship in Istanbul was the perfect way to show how good he is.
“Coming from sixth on the grid, in very difficult conditions and to win by what was quite a big margin in the end.
“So there should be no doubt in anyone’s mind that he is the real deal and not only is he one of the best drivers of his generation, arguably he is one of the best drivers in the history of the sport,” concluded Coulthard.

1997 Formula 1 world champion Jacques Villeneuve also praised Hamilton and shot down theories that the Briton dominates the sport only because of his car.
“Ok, he has the best car, but Bottas also has the best car,” the Canadian said to Sky Italia.
“Bottas has the same car and yet Hamilton wins the championships. In difficult situations like in Istanbul, any driver would have decided to take no risk, to drive more carefully – but he didn’t.
“He won that race in a big way and above everything else it gives credibility to all of his championships,” concluded Villeneuve.
