Season two of Netflix’s successful Formula 1 documentary series features a look at Mercedes’ disastrous 2019 German Grand Prix.
The first season of the series was very successful, but unfortunately two main title contenders Mercedes and Ferrari declined to participate in the series. This changes in season two as both teams agreed to open their doors to Netflix’s cameras and give a behind the scenes look at their operations.
This mean that we are able to get a behind the scenes look at Mercedes’ infamous “retro” German Grand Prix, in fact, episode four of the series titled “Dark Days” in focusing on the event. The official description of the episode says: “Lewis Hamilton and the Mercedes team — long dominant in Formula 1 — face a true test of mettle on a rain-soaked track at the German Grand Prix”.
At the event Mercedes celebrated 125 years of motorsport and decided to dress the team in retro outfits. Mercedes also introduced a special livery, featuring splashes of white, as a nod to the legend of how the Silver Arrows got their name. You can read the story on our Mercedes F1 History page.
To make a long story short, the event is infamous among Mercedes fans because the team suffered one of its worst races of 2019, with Lewis Hamilton finishing the race in P9 (after both Alfa Romeo drivers got 30 second post-race penalties) and Valtteri Bottas retiring on lap 56 of 64. Now we finally get the full story behind the event.
