F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali says he hopes Lewis Hamilton will remain in Formula 1 after 2021 because he is “important” for the series.
Auto Bild asked Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali if he is afraid of losing Lewis Hamilton, after his current one-year contract with Mercedes expires at the end of 2021.
“Lewis is important,” said the Italian.
“In the first place, an incredible challenge awaits him: namely, to become the first and only driver with eight world championship titles. So he will focus on that.
“Of course, he is also actively campaigning against racism and for diversity. It is crucial that he feels comfortable in Formula 1, because that is where he belongs and that is where we and the fans want to see him.”

With Mercedes admitting Red Bull has the faster car at the moment, Lewis might be in for one of the toughest championship fights of his career. However, Domenicali believes the seven-time champion can win.
“Even though it won’t be easy, because at the top it’s getting more and more exciting. He has to be fully concentrated and drive perfectly.
“The competition will not make it easy for him. Max Verstappen will also be looking for his first world title.
“The ingredients for an exciting season are there,” concluded Formula 1’s CEO.
