Fernando Alonso plays down Red Bull’s cost cap breach and compares it to Ferrari winning two races in 2019 with “something that everyone knew was not legal”.
While most drivers and teams are blasting Red Bull for their 2021 budget cap breach, Fernando Alonso decided to make their transgression seem like a normal thing in Formula 1.
More specifically he compared it to the FIA banning an engine Ferrari was using at one point in 2019, and the matter was settled behind closed doors.
“I can’t remember a champion team that hasn’t exploited some element that has surprised the other teams,” the Spaniard said.

“Brawn, Red Bull in 2012, the dominance of Mercedes. Ferrari won two races in 2019 with something that everyone knew was not legal, and nothing happened.
“Those two victories stayed. Imagine if they had won the world championship with that engine.
“In the end I trust in the people who have power. I’m just a driver,” Alonso concluded.
