Formula 1 teams agree to move the 2020 summer shutdown period to March and April due to the global coronavirus pandemic.
The shutdown that normally lasts for two weeks in August has been extended to 21 days. To be able to move the shutdown period from August to March/April all 10 F1 teams had to agree.
“In light of the global impact of the COVID-19 coronavirus currently affecting the organisation of FIA Formula One World Championship events, the World Motor Sport Council has approved a change to the 2020 FIA Formula 1 Sporting Regulations, moving the summer shutdown period from July and August to March and April and extending it from 14 to 21 days,” said the FIA statement.
“All competitors must therefore observe a shutdown period of 21 consecutive days during the months of March and/or April.
“The change was supported unanimously by both the F1 Strategy Group and F1 Commission.”
The move will allow the teams to save money in a period when all racing has been postponed. The plan is to then race all throughout the summer in an effort to include as many of the postponed races as possible.
