On August 3 George Russell has completed 137 laps for Mercedes at Hungaroring in Pirelli’s 2022 18-inch tyre test.
The young Briton has completed 66 laps in the morning session and 71 laps in the afternoon. It is the first time that Russell has driven for Mercedes since he replaced Lewis Hamilton at the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix.
Formula 1 teams are helping Pirelli test their 2022 rubber throughout the 2021 season. Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas already tested Pirelli’s 2022 18-inch tyres at Imola back in April.
Apart from Russell, testing was also done by McLaren’s Lando Norris and Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc. Since it was a sunny day, only dry tyres were tested.
What makes this story noteworthy is the fact that Russell is one of the two main candidates for Mercedes’ 2022 seat, along with Bottas.
Mercedes is expected to make a decision on who will partner Lewis Hamilton in 2022 over the summer break.
