After a fantastic drive at the Spanish Grand Prix, George Russell said he was “pleased to be able to bring it home in P3”.

Not only did George Russell produce a wonderful result for Mercedes at the Spanish Grand Prix, but he did so by being able to hold off two much faster Red Bulls for a number of laps.

After the race the Briton was asked if this means Mercedes’ upgrades have put the team back in the fight.

“I’d love to say that, but today was very tough,” the Briton said.

“I gave everything I could to hold Max off, but he did an amazing job. I’m just so proud to be standing here, because the guys have worked so hard.

“So this one is for the guys back at Brackley and Brixworth.”

Unfortunately both Mercedes encountered technical problems in the final laps of the race and were asked by the team “lift and coast”. George says it was difficult at the end.

“When I had the Red Bulls in my mirrors, all I was doing was my maximum to keep them behind, and it was an enjoyable good couple of laps.

“I’m just pleased to be able to bring it home in P3. It’s a lot of points on the board for us. Well done to Max, he did a great job.

“It was very difficult in the last few laps. It was a survival race,” Russell concluded.
