George Russell says he has “not a single doubt” that Lewis Hamilton would “still be fighting for the world championship” even if “every single car was the same”.
While giving his opinion on what is expected to be a closer Formula 1 season under the new 2022 rules, George Russell said he believes Lewis Hamilton is “the best driver out there”.
The young Briton, who is a strong candidate to become Hamilton’s team-mate in 2022, bases his opinion on personal experience, as he has been in Mercedes’ garage on numerous occasions.
Not only did he replace Lewis for the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix, but he has also tested for Mercedes numerous times, and served as the team’s reserve driver in 2018.

“I think that’s why we’re all so excited for next year, we just all want a closer playing field and let the best man win,” said the Briton.
“I really believe Lewis is the best driver out there because I have been inside that Mercedes team, I know what he does.
“Quite often the best driver gets in the best team. If every single car was the same, he’d still be fighting for the world championship. There’s not a single doubt about that.
“I think, even he would welcome a more [competitive] championship.”
