George Russell says if he could choose “to race against anybody as my teammate”, he would choose Lewis Hamilton.

George Russell is one of the two drivers being considered by Mercedes for the 2022 seat. At the Belgian Grand Prix Thursday press conference he said he would love to have the opportunity to go up against Lewis Hamilton in the same car.

“Obviously, as any driver, they want to go against the best and Lewis is probably the greatest of all time,” the young Briton said.

“You want to put yourself against [them] and see how you fare. It would be an honour for anybody to get that opportunity.

“It’s all hypothetical at the moment. [These] are the same comments as I’ve said [before]. If I could choose to race against anybody as my teammate, Lewis would be the one.”

However, there is another candidate for the seat, and it’s Mercedes’ current driver Valtteri Bottas. Having crashed into each other at Imola, the two drivers were asked how their relationship is right now.

“Our personal relationship is fine,” Russell said.

“We’re competitors and it’s rare that two Formula 1 drivers or two competitors are best friends, but Valtteri and I are both grown-ups.

“We’ve moved on from everything from the past and there’s no issues, from my side at least.”

Bottas agrees: “It’s all good, thanks for asking. Everything is fine”.
