George Russell says if Mercedes is “still third fastest, with so many issues, then when we solve them we should be in a good spot”.

Although Lewis Hamilton had a terrible Saudi Arabian Grand Prix Qualifying, exiting in Q1, George Russell managed to put his Mercedes in P6.

George says as a team, Mercedes did not have a good day.

“We are one team,” the Briton told Sky Sports F1.

“As a team it was not a good day, we don’t have a handle on the car it’s been inconsistent.

“We’re fighting a small window, my side we managed to get it in the window, don’t know why or how, but on Lewis’ side they didn’t manage to get it in the window.

“We take the positives but it doesn’t help us in the long run. We are not here to fight for P6 or P5, and we’re nine-tenths behind Checo.”

“It’s just confidence. I have been in a position with no confidence in the car on a circuit like this. If it’s on a knife-edge, you can’t push it to the limit.”

However, Russell says that Mercedes is still the third fastest team on the grid.

“It’s going to take time. We have to be grateful and thankful that we have such an issue but are the third-fastest team.

“If we are still third fastest, with so many issues, then when we solve them we should be in a good spot,” George concluded.
