George Russell sends a message to Max Verstappen and Red Bull: “This is a championship based on results and not necessarily based on pace”.
Despite the problems Mercedes is facing, after three races of the 2022 season, George Russell sits second in the championship standings.
His team might not have the pace that they need, but they have more reliability than much faster Red Bull, as the Max Verstappen has two DNFs in three race, while Sergio Perez has one.
Russell says he was surprised to finde himself in P2, but adds the championship is not won by pace alone.
“Somebody told me that and I didn’t believe them,” the Briton told Sky Sports F1.

“It’s pretty crazy to think, but this is a championship based on results and not necessarily based on pace.”
Russell then said he believes his team will be able to solve the car’s issues and join the fight at the top.
“We know if we want to keep that position we need to find more performance in the car and I believe in my team back at base to be able to bring more performance but it’s going to take a lot of team.
“For the time being, let’s just keep capitalising,” he concluded.
