After the Spanish Grand Prix FP1&2, Lewis Hamilton says Mercedes still has “some bouncing, but it’s way better”, so he hopes to “tackle the heels of the guys up ahead”.

Judging by Mercedes’ performance in Spanish Grand Prix free practice sessions, it seems the team’s upgrades are working.

In Friday’s second free practice George Russell managed to put the car in P2, closely followed by Lewis Hamilton in P3.

After the session Lewis seemed truly optimistic for the first time in 2022.

“It’s positive, [I’m] super happy with the progress,” the Briton said.

“So a big, big, big thank you to everyone back at the factory for not giving up and for continuing to push.

“We’re not the quickest, yet, but I think we’re on our way. It’s the first time I’ve driven down the straight without bouncing.

“We still have some bouncing, but it’s way better. So it’s something to eke out a bit of the potential in the car.”

The Briton went on to say he expects even more progress on Saturday.

“It’s still tough out there with the car but it’s much nicer than it’s been before. Really grateful for those upgrades.

“Now we need to fine-tune them into the next session, overnight lots of data to go over, try and position the car…

“I think we can get it into an even better place for tomorrow, so then hopefully we can tackle the heels of the guys up ahead,” Hamilton concluded.
