Lewis Hamilton narrowly beat his team-mate Valtteri Bottas to take pole at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix Qualifying.

After securing a Mercedes front row lockout, Hamilton was happy with how quali went.

“Physically it’s tough,” said the Briton.

“It’s the fastest we’ve ever been round here so the forces through your body are pretty intense. Then you’re just trying to manage the tyres on your laps.

“The first lap was decent, which did the job thankfully. I was here with the guys until 10pm last night just looking through the details, and seeing where we can get better for the race.

“These Red Bulls are super fast,” concluded the six-time champion.

Although Bottas is ‘annoyed’ at missing out on pole, he is also happy with the overall result.

“I knew it was going be exciting with Lewis,“ said the Finn.

“I’ve been having trouble with sector three all day. It was getting better and better, but it wasn’t good enough. It’s annoying, but he did good. As a team we have the first row of the grid again.

“The start will be my best chance. On Friday I saw that my long runs are competitive, so I have the speed, but the start will be my best chance.

“I’m trying to be first in turn one, believe me,” concluded Bottas.
