Lewis Hamilton had a terrible weekend at Imola, as Mercedes’ problems, combined with him being stuck in a DRS train for most of the race, relegated him to P13 in the end.
However, the most awkward moment happened when he got lapped by his 2021 title-rival Max Verstappen.
After the race a journalist asked Hamilton:
“When you see Max lapping you, I know it doesn’t matter who’s lapping you, it’s never a good feeling, but does that kind of show you how far you guys have changed over time?”

Lewis took a little pause and then responded with: “Yeah, just shows how wrong we got it.”
Verstappen was also asked to give his opinion on the situation, but chose not to make a big deal out of it.
“They have been slow all year so it is not really a surprise or [I don’t feel] happy lapping Lewis compared to anyone else,” the Dutch driver said.
“It is what it is,” Max concluded.
Hopefully Mercedes will get on top of their issues sooner rather than later, so we won’t have to see these types of situations again in 2022.
