Lewis Hamilton and Toto Wolff said that George Russell’s amazing qualifying performance doesn’t change how they feel about him regarding a possible 2022 Mercedes seat.
George Russell impressed everyone today when he qualified for the Belgian Grand Prix in P2, in a Williams!
At the post-qualifying press conference Lewis Hamilton was asked if this performance changes how he feels about the possibility of Russell becoming his 2022 team-mate.
“I don’t feel any different,” Hamilton said.
“I mean, George has been doing a great job all year. This just doesn’t really change anything.
“I’m sure he’s got pressure on him just as Valtteri does to do the job. And it’s great to see him delivering.
“I can’t fault him for it,” concluded the seven-time champion.

After the qualifying session Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff was also asked about the young Briton’s performance.
“Yeah, a very good lap, very impressive,” the Austrian told Sky Sports F1.
“To put in such a lap and keep it on the track, and then it was a sniff away from pole position, so yeah, congratulations.”
When asked if this performance changes the way he feels about Russell potentially getting a Mercedes seat next year, Wolff said:
“No. I think by now we know where we stand and we know what he can do. Today is just another confirmation…
“He can drive,” conclude Mercedes’ team boss.
