Lewis Hamilton says Mercedes’ improvements offer “a glimpse of hope for the team” and gives his thoughts on his title chances.

After the Spanish Grand Prix Qualifying it has become obvious that Mercedes has made a step forward, with team boss Toto Wolff even announcing that the team now understands what was causing their porpoising problem and how to stop it.

Lewis Hamilton says there’s still work to be done to challenge the championship leaders.

“I’m in the same position I was in the last race, but we are progressing,” the Briton said.

“We don’t have the bouncing in a straight line, which is a huge, huge difference. But we still have some bouncing in like Turn 3 and Turn 9.

“So we still have some improvements to make, but the car’s a lot better. You see in Q2, we were quickest. So that’s a glimpse of hope for the team.”

Lewis was then asked if Mercedes’ improvement offers some hope that he might get back into the title picture.

“I’m not really putting my mind to that, I’m still way off,” the Briton said.

“My teammate’s fourth, so that means the car should be at least third or fourth, and I’m sixth. So I’m still struggling with the car.

“I don’t know how to get around that, I don’t know what I’m going to do, but I’ll just continue to try and work hard on myself,” Hamilton concluded.
