Contrary to what Fernando Alonso suggested, Lewis Hamilton says battling from the back of the grid “is way more fun than starting first and pulling away”.
After a collision between Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso at the Belgian Grand Prix, the Spaniard told his team over the radio that Lewis “only knows how to drive and start in first”.
Well it didn’t take long for the Briton to prove Alonso wrong. At the Italian Grand Prix Hamilton had to start the race from P19, due to an engine related grid penalty, and after an amazing drive he finished the race in P5.
Lewis later said he loved charging through the field.
“It’s a thousand times more enjoyable, battling with people,” he said.
“When I started my first go-kart was like an old kart, it was all bent and buckled, and we always had to start at the back, with old tyres. And that’s what I’ve always enjoyed doing.

“And so starting today, just having those battles is way more fun than starting first and pulling away. It’s a different challenge. But I much prefer the battling with people.
“When you win it’s something completely different, and you feel proud for everybody. I love the idea of moving forward. So today I felt like I climbed up a ladder.
“Progress is a good thing,” Hamilton concluded.
Even before Lewis’ amazing display of skill, Alonso had apologized to the Briton for his comments.
