Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff says it’s going to be “overwhelming” for Lewis Hamilton when he equals Michael Schumacher’s record.
Lewis Hamilton is just one race win away from equaling Michael Schumacher’s most career wins record. Hamilton, who stands at 90 race wins, had his first opportunity to equal Michael’s 91 career wins at the Russian Grand Prix, however two five-second penalties took away his fighting chance.
His next opportunity will be at next weekend’s Eifel Grand Prix, on Mercedes home track – the Nürburgring. Toto Wolff believes it will be very “emotional” for Hamilton once he equals the record.
“It is incredible and we don’t think about it a lot,” Wolff told Sky Sports F1.
“I think Lewis pushes it aside a little bit because he would have never dreamed of having 91 wins, he would have never dreamt of having a similar career like Michael.
“For a driver, it must be very emotional if you achieve that, and this is why he doesn’t have a lot of space in his head at the moment.
“If he can do it, it is going to be overwhelming to be ahead of the greatest driver of all time,” concluded Wolff.
