In a talk with Timo Glock, Lewis Hamilton said the outcome in 2021 was different than in 2008, because “in 2021 someone manipulated the result to be the way it was”.

Lewis Hamilton’s first world title win in 2008 was not without its controversy. Lewis won the title on the last corner of the last lap of the final race of the season – the Brazilian Grand Prix, when he overtook Timo Glock, who was on wrong tyres at the time.

Brazilian Felipe Massa was already celebrating his title win, before he was informed that it was Hamilton who actually won the title in the final moments of the race.

This caused many to accuse Glock of deliberately letting Lewis through, which exposed him to fan abuse and even serious threats.

In a talk with Lewis Hamilton, Glock revealed how hard it was for him at the time.

“For me, in that time in 2008, I had a police escort to the airport after the race,” Glock told Lewis.

“You never realise when you’re not facing it. And I had never faced this before, and I thought at the time ‘how unfair can the world be’.”

Upon hearing this, Lewis said he was sorry he wasn’t able to support him more at the time.

“I’m sorry that I wasn’t able to help at the time,” the Briton said.

“I didn’t understand what was going on for you, in your world. I was very young, so I’m sorry I wasn’t able to support you in that time. If that was today, I know I could be there and support you.”

Glock then asked Lewis if he thinks there are similarities between how he won the title in 2008, and how he lost the title at the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

This prompted Lewis to once again point out that in 2008 events transpired naturally, while in 2021 the outcome was determined by race director not following the rules.

“No it was different, 2008 wasn’t manipulated,” Lewis said, using the same words he used over the team radio in Abu Dhabi.

“In 2021, someone manipulated the result to be the way it was,” he concluded.

When Red Bull’s advisor Dr Helmut Marko was asked about Lewis’ comment, he said:

“I can’t understand this at all. We cannot keep letting this issue come up again and again.

“It’s over,” Marko concluded.
