Lewis Hamilton says he will “give it everything to try and fight” Max Verstappen at the Qatar Grand Prix on Sunday.

After qualifying in P3 for the Qatar Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton was asked where his battle is on Sunday.

“With everyone around me,” he said.

The interviewer then suggested that he is obviously not looking to fight Max Verstappen who is in P1, and asked who specifically he’s aiming at, Lewis said:

“No, I’m battling the guy to the right of me [Verstappen] for sure. I think, yeah, I’ll give it everything to try and fight him.

“Maybe he will just disappear like he does in most of the other races, but maybe we’ll be able to fight.”

Asked again if his real battle is with Sergio Perez over P2 in the Drivers’ Championship, the Briton did not budge:

“No, I’m trying to win the race. It  doesn’t matter who I’m fighting against.”

George Russell who is starting the race from P2 was also asked if he thinks he can do anything about Verstappen on Sunday.

“Probably waving him goodbye, I think, after Turn 1,” George said.

“Max has done an exceptional job. He deserves to be champion this year. Of course, you know, Formula 1, we love the competition, but we can’t take anything away from what he and Red Bull have done.

“And we need to look at ourselves in the mirror and raise our game into next year and give them a challenge,” Russell concluded.
