Lewis Hamilton says the news that Red Bull had broken the 2021 cost cap, brought up “a little bit of emotion” from the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, that he had “buried”.

Earlier this month the FIA announced that Red Bull was in beach of the 2021 budget cap. Considering how closely fought last season was, there’s no doubt that any such breach could have made a difference in the outcome of the championship.

Lewis Hamilton says this news brought back the emotions he buried after Michael Masi’s controversial decisions at the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, which cost him his eighth championship title.

In a talk with BBC, Lewis said what happened in Abu Dhabi was “definitely spirit-breaking, or soul-crushing, whatever you want to call it”.

“[News of Red Bull’s cost cap breach] for sure brings up a little bit of emotion, because you kind of buried [what happened in 2021] and moved on,” Hamilton added.

“And then it comes back up and it’s like another bit of a kick. And, yeah, that just bought it all kind of fresh again.

“So then [it was a case of] just getting back into the phase of just suppressing it and moving forwards,” Lewis concluded.
