Before Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen’s relationship turned sour in 2021, Lewis expressed his support for the Dutch driver and said he sees himself in him.
In a several years old interview, which surfaced recently, Lewis Hamilton was asked to comment on young Max Verstappen.
The Briton was very complimentary of the Red Bull driver.
“I look at Max he’s a great driver, I see myself there,” Lewis said at the time.
“I know what it’s like when you’re young. So when people say ‘Oh he is making mistakes’ I’m like ‘Who didn’t make mistakes at 18 years old, 20 years old?’

“So I really sympathise with the experience that he’s having and the things people say and you know, he’s on his own journey.
“He’ll make whatever mistakes he makes and take leaps and bounds, whatever he decides to do,” Hamilton concluded.
Unfortunately, the way Verstappen behaved in his on-track battles with Hamilton in 2021, has certainly soured the relationship, but it’s nice to see Lewis being supportive of a young driver, who was yet to fully adapt to Formula 1.
