Mercedes confirmed Lewis Hamilton will be in attendance at the FIA Prize Giving Ceremony, for the first time since the controversial 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

The FIA’s Prize Giving Ceremony, where Max Verstappen will officially be crowned the 2023 Formula 1 champion, will be held this Friday in Azerbaijan.

Under F1’s regulations the top three in the Drivers’ Championship are required to attend the ceremony, and Mercedes confirmed Lewis Hamilton will be in attendance to pick up his P3 trophy.

The last time Lewis was expected to attend was in 2021, when he was required to pick up his runner-up trophy after losing the title fight to Max Verstappen in the controversial 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

In that race, race director Michael Masi blatantly ignored the rules which govern the use of the Safety Car, and basically served Verstappen the race win and the 2021 title on a silver platter.

Lewis then embarked on a period of media silence and no showed the ceremony, and for this he was fined $50,000, after agreeing with FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem that the money would be donated to a student from a disadvantaged background, who wanted to achieve a career in motorsport.

Last year Lewis was not required to attend as he finished the 2022 championship in P6.

The event will be held at the Baku Convention Center with a start time scheduled for 7pm UK time (8pm CET).
