Lewis Hamilton has his first opportunity to equal Michael Schumacher’s seven Formula 1 world titles record at the Turkish Grand Prix!
But how can the Briton do it? Well there are many ways. Quite simply, to keep his championship hopes alive, Valtteri Bottas needs to outscore Hamilton by at least eight points. This means if the Briton wins, he is the 2020 World Champion, regardless of Bottas’ position. But there are also other ways.
The ‘Bottas on the podium’ situation
If Bottas was to win in a Mercedes 1-2, Hamilton would also become champion, provided that the Finn fails to pick up a point for fastest lap. If Bottas was to finish second, Hamilton would need to finish at least fourth, regardless of whether the Finn gets the fastest lap point.
If Bottas finishes third, Hamilton needs at least a fifth place finish, provided that Bottas scores a point for fastest lap. If he doesn’t, Hamilton needs to finish at least in P6 to pick up the title.

The ‘Bottas without the podium’ situation
If Valtteri misses out on the podium and finished in P4, Hamilton would need to finish at least seventh, regardless of whether Bottas gets the fastest lap point. If the Finn is in P5, Lewis only need P8 to clinch the title. If, however, the Briton gets a point for fastest lap, P9 would suffice.
If Bottas finishes in P6, plus a fastest lap point, Hamilton would need at least P9. Without the additional point, P10 will suffice. And, finally, if the Finn finishes any lower than sixth Lewis is the champion regardless of where he finishes (or doesn’t finish).
The Verdict
Taking all this into account, the likelihood of Lewis walking away from Turkey with his seventh title in hand is very high. Regardless of what happens, Mercedes has already mathematically won its seventh consecutive double crown!
