How can Mercedes win the constructors’ title in Portugal?

Mercedes gets its first chance to win the 2020 constructors’ title at this weekend’s Portuguese Grand Prix. However, it won’t be easy.

Mercedes currently sits 180 points ahead of second-placed Red Bull. To win the championship in Portugal the team needs to extend its lead to 220 points.

The maximum number of points the German team can score in the race is 44, which is enough to win the championship, provided that Red Bull doesn’t score more than three points in the race.

So, the team needs a one-two finish, while both Red Bull drivers mustn’t finish higher than ninth. Mercedes could also get by with a one-three finish if Red Bull doesn’t score any points.

So, it’s a hard mountain to climb, but at the next race  at Imola, Mercedes will only need a 176 points lead over its closest competitor to win the title. And that is very doable.
