1997 F1 champion Jacques Villeneuve says Lewis Hamilton is “not showing his age”, and adds his quest for his eighth world title is not “futile”, despite Mercedes’ current issues.

Lewis Hamilton has finally signed a new two-year deal with Mercedes, and 1997 Formula 1 champion Jacques Villeneuve is not surprised at all.

“He is still younger than fFernando] Alonso,” the Canadian said.

“Lewis is not showing his age, it’s like Alonso, it’s all down to how hungry someone is and how one is willing to still push the envelope, the limit.

“And how much he’s enjoying the dream he had as a little kid, which was to be a race car driver.”

When asked if, in light of Mercedes’ current performance issues, Lewis’ quest to win his eighth Formula 1 is futile, Villeneuve said:

“Why would it be futile? Mercedes were so far ahead, and no one else gave up.

“It’s possible that Red Bull arrives at a point where they can’t evolve the car because they hit a wall in the development and Mercedes finds something,” the 1997 world champion concluded.
