Mercedes has announced that Lewis Hamilton has chosen the French Grand Prix FP1 to give reserve driver Nyck de Vries an opportunity to drive the W13.

Formula 1 teams are required to give two practice sessions in a season to young drivers, with their main drivers themselves deciding when it’ll happen.

Mercedes has announced that their reserve driver Nyck de Vries will get his opportunity in French Grand Prix Free Practice 1.

“This weekend [Nyck de Vries] will be taking the wheel of W13 for FP1,” Mercedes announced on their social media channels.

“Lewis has chosen this weekend to fulfil the first of two young driver sessions required by all teams this season.

“George has selected one later in the year,” the statement concluded.

As Mercedes is expected to perform well at Paul Ricard, a missed practice session might not be a big deal for Hamilton.
