Lewis Hamilton has been nominated for the 2021 Laureus World Sportsman of the Year Award. The seven-time champ gives his comments!

Hamilton has been nominated for his achievements during 2020, among them his history-making seventh championship win. It’s his seventh nomination in the category, while in 2020 he shared the award with Lionel Messi. In 2008 he also won the Laureus Breakthrough of the Year award, after winning the F1 championship in his second season.

“It’s an honour to have been nominated for Laureus World Sportsman of the Year alongside some truly incredible athletes,” Hamilton said after the nominees have been announced.

“When I look back at the award ceremony last year, it’s hard to believe just how much has changed. 2020 was a difficult year for so many people, for many different reasons and of course the world of sport was hugely affected.

“I was fortunate enough to be able to race and I’m so proud of what we, as a team, were able to achieve together.

“I’m even prouder of the journey we began towards making the motorsport industry more diverse and inclusive.

“Nelson Mandela was the inspiration behind Laureus and I’m sure he would support everything we can do to use sport to achieve a greater good,” concluded the Briton.

Other nominees in the World Sportsman of the Year category are Tennis ace Rafael Nadal, NBA superstar LeBron James, Bayern Munich footballer Robert Lewandowski, record-breaking long-distance runner Joshua Cheptegei and pole vault world record holder Armand Duplantis.

The Laureus Awards are voted for by the world’s sports media, and the 2021 winners will be announced in a virtual ceremony in May. It’s important to note that the Mercedes F1 team has also been nominated in the World Team of the Year category. Good luck Lewis and the Team!
