Hamilton is the BBC Sports Personality of the Year runner-up

Lewis Hamilton is the BBC Sports Personality of the year runner-up for the second year in a row. He has previously won the award in 2014.

Hamilton, who clinced his sixth Formula 1 world championship in 2019 was beaten by England’s cricket player Ben Stokes. The winner of the prestigious British award is determined by public votes.

In addition to winning the trophy in 2014, Hamilton has been runner-up in 2007, 2008 and 2018.

Four other Formula 1 drivers, apart from Hamilton, have won the award in the past: Sir Stirling Moss, Sir Jackie Stewars, Nigel Mansell and Damon Hill.
