Lewis Hamilton says many Formula 1 drivers are “difficult to fight”, but Max Verstappen is “extra difficult” because he is in the “best shape of his life”.

Lewis Hamilton was answering questions from young Dutch viewers of ‘jeugdjournaal.nl’, when he was asked how difficult it is to fight Max Verstappen.

“It’s enormously difficult to race against Verstappen,” the Briton said.

“But there are so many drivers who are difficult to fight. Yet Verstappen is extra difficult because he is very talented and is in a good team.

“He is in the best shape of his life at the moment, both physically and mentally I think. It’s a hard fight, but that’s what makes it beautiful.”

Lewis was also asked how it would feel to win his 100th race, which could happen this weekend at the Italian Grand Prix.

“I don’t know how it will feel to take my 100th win. I never thought I would get this far, so it feels a bit surreal.

“We work hard to be champions, but that’s easier said than done. There are so many uncertainties to take into account.

“All we can do is make the most of it day to day and then we’ll see where we are,” concluded Hamilton.
