Lewis Hamilton says his entry into the electric off-road series Extreme E will allow him to “merge my love for motor racing together with my love for the planet.”
In 2021 Hamilton will enter his new team X44 in the all-electric off-road series Extreme E. The series aims to highlight environmental issues and promote sustainability, electrification and diversity.
At the Extreme E virtual presentation the Briton reiterated his commitment to the goals of the series.
“I’ve always wanted to have my own team, I just never knew when it would be,” said Hamilton.
“When I heard about this I jumped right at it, because of what the series means, what the series is going to do. It’s going to be quite powerful, I think.
“It gives an opportunity for me to able to merge my love for motor racing together with my love for the planet.

“It’s going to keep people talking about the climate issue and inspiring us to take action… to have a championship series that will address traditional ways of racing, and the negative impact motorsports does have on the planet, and offer an alternative.”
Hamilton’s team will go up against Nico Rosberg’s Rosberg Xtreme Racing team, while McLaren boss Zak Brown is also involved in the series through Andretti United Extreme E team.
Series founder Alejandro Agag believes the rekindling of Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg’s rivalry will help attract eyeballs to the series and its causes.
“This puts the competition on a different level,” Agag told Reuters.
“Having Lewis and Nico makes so much easier our job of raising awareness about the problems of climate change and pollution.”
