After receiving honorary Brazilian citizenship, Lewis Hamilton said the 2021 Sao Paulo Grand Prix was “one of the most special moments of my entire life”.

After Lewis Hamilton’s dominant performance at the 2021 Sao Paulo Grand Prix, and his legendary celebration with the Brazilian flag, Congressman Andre Figueiredo proposed that Lewis be made an honorary citizen of Brazil.

Now, ahead of the 2022 Sao Paulo Grand Prix, Lewis officially received the citizenship in a special ceremony at Brazil’s Congress chamber.

“It is honestly the greatest honour for me to be here receiving and accepting the citizenship,” Hamilton said.

“I really do feel like now I’m one of you, finally.

“When I arrived here in 2007, the love that’s grown through the experiences we’ve had, and particularly 2021, knowing you guys would cheer me on the way was one of the most special moments of my entire life.

“I want to dedicate this honor to my hero Ayrton Senna,” Lewis concluded.

Lower House Speaker Arthur Lira said Lewis was “a hero for all Brazilians” and “a Briton by birth and a Brazilian by heart”.

“Brazilian role models like Senna and Hamilton make us sure that every Brazilian can overcome challenges and win the races in life,” he continued.

“I hope you return many times to this country that is also your country now,” Lira concluded.
