Lewis Hamilton says Mercedes has “some work to do”, because Aston Martin did “such an amazing job”, and they ‘built their car in Mercedes’ wind tunnel’.

After a difficult Bahrain Grand Prix, in which Lewis Hamilton finished in P4, the Briton conceded that Mercedes is now the “fourth fastest team”, behind Red Bull, Ferrari and Aston Martin.

“The the Ferrari’s were just quicker than us today, we’re the fourth fastest team.

“We was close for a second and then just couldn’t hold on to him.”

Lewis also revealed that he told his team prior to the race that their strategy of long stints was not going to work.

“When we did the strategy in the morning, I told the guys it wasn’t going to go as far as they said it was going to go, and it didn’t!”

Ultimately he conceded that Mercedes has a lot of work ahead of them if they are to get back in the mix.

“We’ve got a lot of work to do. We’ve just got to add downforce to the car, we’re lacking a lot of downforce.

“As soon as we put more load on the rear and the front and we’ll pick up that pace.”

After impressing everybody in pre-season testing, the Bahrain Grand Prix practice session, and in qualifying, Fernando Alonso ultimately managed to put his Aston Martin in P3 in the race, ahead of both Mercedes.

Lewis says his team needs to look at Aston Martin, because their car is full of Mercedes’ parts, and it was “built” in Mercedes’ wind tunnel.

“Hats off to the Aston Martin team, they did such an amazing job. We’ve got work to do, because half the car is ours!

“They build their car in our wind tunnel, or do their aero in our wind tunnel, so we’ve got some work to do.”
