After weeks of media speculation Lewis Hamilton finally explains why he only signed a one-year contract extension with Mercedes.
When Lewis Hamilton’s new Mercedes contract was reveals many found it strange that it was only for 2021. Of course this led to media speculation about which of the two parties wanted a short-term deal. At Mercedes’ 2021 car launch Lewis finally revealed the deal was what he wanted.
“Firstly, I’m kind of in a fortunate position where I’ve achieved most of the stuff that I’ve wanted to achieve up to this point,” Hamilton explained.
“So there’s no real need necessarily to plan too far ahead in the future. I think we live in quite an unusual period of time in life, and I just wanted a one year.
“Then we can talk about if we do more, and keep adding it if we have to.”
Asked about his priorities for 2021, Hamilton revealed his off-track work was his main focus now.
“The main priority for 2021 – in the past it was just about winning championships.

“Last year there was a lot of discussion about equality and inclusion, and I think there was a lot of talk. This year is all about pushing for diversity, and really making sure that action is taken.
“That is at the core of the drive for me, but of course we exist to win, and that is what all these guys and girls here and working towards, so that is my goal, to deliver that for them.”
And finally, Lewis said he was looking forward to taking his new car for a spin.
“The launch day of a new car is always a really exciting one.
“It’s great to reveal to the world the result of everyone’s hard work at the factories and to see some of my team-mates in person, which has been so rare during the past year.
“I’ve been in touch with the engineers through the winter, keeping track of their preparations as I prepare myself for the season ahead.
“The excitement has been building and building, so now I just can’t wait to get out on track in the W12,” concluded the seven-time champion.
