Lewis Hamilton discusses whether he could have won the 2022 Sao Paulo Grand Prix had he not been involved in a collision with Max Verstappen.

On lap 1 of the Sao Paulo Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen collided, which caused Lewis to drop down the field.

The race was ultimately won by George Russell, closely followed by Hamilton. In a talk with Channel 4, Lewis was asked if he thought his race was over after the collision.

“It definitely was,” the Briton said.

“I think we would have had a lot more opportunities within the two stops that we had, and applying the pressure, it would have been great to have that battle.

“It’s not the easiest of circuits to overtake and you usually need to have a bigger delta in terms of pacing the other car.

“We were very, very close. There’s only a one or two tenths between us, particularly at any given time.

“I would have loved to have had the chance of just – pushing, pushing, pushing and seeing if an opportunity arises.”

Lewis also revealed that him and Russell opted for different wing setups.

“We had different wings setups, I was quicker on the straights, and he was quicker through that middle section with the big wing.

“So it wasn’t meant to be,” Hamilton concluded.
