Lewis Hamilton says he was asked about George Russell by Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff and he gave “positive feedback”, but he didn’t influence the final decision.
Earlier his week Mercedes has finally made its decision – George Russell will be Lewis Hamilton’s team-mate in 2022. Ahead of the Italian Grand Prix Hamilton was asked how much input did he have in the decision.
“Not really much input to be honest,” the Briton said.
“Toto [Wolff] and I talk, we discuss everything, and we work together as a team in terms of how we navigate moving forward.
“He asked me what I thought about George and I gave positive feedback. He asked me how I felt about Valtteri and I did the same, but at the end of the day, it is his and the board’s decision.
“I think you’ve seen how positive it’s been. Valtteri’s been incredibly gracious in the decision that was made, and he’s got a great bright future with the team he is moving to.
“It’s been really positive in the media with George’s announcement on joining the team, so that’s pretty cool.”
Lewis was then asked if he had the ability to veto Mercedes’ decision.

“That’s not really my style. Ever since I joined this team… I remember joining in 2013, and I remember saying to Ross [Brawn, former Mercedes team boss] that I just wanted equal opportunity.
“That’s the most rewarding position to be in because if you do the work and you do succeed, then you know you’ve done your job against whoever it is at their best.
“Winning when someone’s wings are clipped, that’s not something that interests me.”
The seven-time champion also gave his comments on his relationship with his current team-mate Valtteri Bottas.
“It’s been amazing. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it, it’s been an amazing journey. I’ve earned a friend through the time and we’ve helped the team achieve four world titles during that time.
“Obviously we’re still trying to close out on a high, but I’m also just really excited for his next chapter in his life.
“Everything that we’ve grown and learnt together, he will continue on growing and improving,” concluded Hamilton.
