Amid speculation and mean-spirited digs about his future, Lewis Hamilton shot back by saying he’ll be the one to decide when his “masterpiece” is finished.

Lewis Hamilton has been having a hard time on the track in the first four races of the 2022 season. The worst of it came at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, when Mercedes’ car troubles, combined with him being stuck in a DRS train, relegated him to P13.

This prompted some pundits to speculate that Lewis might be considering retirement. The most vocal was Red Bull’s Dr Helmut Marko who took a dig at Hamilton by saying:

“He was lapped by us so maybe he should have stopped last year, he is thinking [that] maybe.”

However, Lewis gave his answer by posting photos of himself in the Mercedes garage on social media, with the caption:

“Working on my masterpiece, I’ll be the one to decide when it’s finished.”

In a press conference ahead of the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, Lewis also stated that he intends to continue on in Formula 1.

“I think we’re all sent these challenges through our through our journeys and through our lives and this is one that I’m really enjoying,” Lewis said.

“I’m really enjoying spending more time with the team, deeper dives into engineering, into aero characteristics, development of the simulator and the simulation tools.

“I think it’s enabled me to become even more involved in development which is exciting. I think I still feel fresh and still feel young, to be honest, even though I’m around all these youngsters here.

“So, I don’t think [winning or not winning my eighth championship is] going to be the deciding factor whether I continue or not.

“I plan to be here,” he concluded.
