Lewis Hamilton says he’s “really proud” of Nyck de Vries

After Nyck de Vries made his F1 race debut at the Italian Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton says the Dutchman has “been a real valuable member” of Mercedes.

At the Italian Grand Prix Mercedes’ reserve driver Nyck de Vries got the opportunity to make his Formula 1 race debut, when Williams driver Alex Albon was sidelined with apendicitis.

The Dutch driver impressed everyone when the managed to get into Q2 in qualifying, and the next day in the race he finished in P9, and scored his first two F1 points.

Ahead of quali Lewis Hamilton gave his comments on Nyck de Vries and his incredible opportunity.

“He’s been a real valuable member of our team,” the Briton said.

“He works does a lot of work on the simulator. He’s always super-positive, he fires me emails. And so I was so happy to hear this morning that he’ll be given the opportunity to drive.

“He deserves a place here, I think, so I hope today’s been good for him.”

After Nyck’s fantastic performance in the race, Lewis was full of praise.

“Oh, [I’m] incredibly happy for Nyck, and really proud of him. He’s such a good lad, a good human, he’s been a good part of our team working with us.

“I hope Albon is OK, I know he’s gone through a hard weekend, but for Nyck to have jumped in and finish in the top ten in his first race.

“That’s mega for your first race since ages,” Hamilton concluded.
