Lewis Hamilton says he has “never wanted to be defined” by being just a driver because “there are so many more elements to who I am”.

At Mercedes’ 2022 car launch Lewis Hamilton was asked about his interest and activities aimed at various issues such as anti-racism, inclusion, the environment and more.

Lewis says at one point he realised that he wanted to use his platform to influence positive change is society.

“I think this is something that year on year I get asked about legacy, in the earlier years that was difficult to pinpoint or understand what it meant,” Hamilton said.

“I obviously read the books about Nelson Mandela and look at his legacy that he left, and how he used his time on this earth.

“I’ve been given this opportunity to do what I do, and be great at something. I’ve never wanted to be defined by [being just] a driver. There are so many more elements to who I am.

“Ultimately, [I’m] someone that cares and tries to use the platform to really shift conceptions and put pressure on systems to go in the right direction, to be more inclusive,” Lewis concluded.
