At the FIA Prize-Giving Gala Lewis Hamilton has been awarded the 2021 Personality of the Year award, but as announced today, he was not there to collect it.

Amid controversy stemming from the ending of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton has been announced at FIA’s 2021 Personality of the Year.

The winner is voted for by permanently accredited media from the FIA’s World Championships, and awarded to the person they believe achieved an exceptional performance this season.

However, the moment was a bit awkward as Lewis was not present at the ceremony, due to aforementioned Abu Dhabi Grand Prix controversy.

The presenters announced Lewis could not be there, which is technically not true, because in today’s Mercedes press conference Toto Wolff announced him and Lewis will not be attending the Gala in protest of what happened in Abu Dhabi.

In the end presenters said they will mail the trophy to Lewis. Awkward.
